Tropicbirds, one of the most elegant seabirds!

Pantai Ngonap (Ngongap Beach), Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta is probably one of the most easiest place in Java to watch the White-tailed Tropicbird (Phaeton lepturus) colonies, because they breed there.
Tropicbirds is one of the most elegant seabirds with his very long central tail feathers. In 16th August 2014 we saw more than 20 birds flying around our spot. What a good number! *for me. And lucky for me, i got two subspecies ssp. lepturus and ssp. fulvus with his striking golden color.

After finish taking some photos we go back to our basecamp, but before that we make a stop for lunch. And one of the most famous food in Gunung Kidul is "Belalang Goreng" or Fried Grasshopper. Well...not bad, i like it!

Survey to Jatiluhur Dam

JATILUHUR DAM
The Jatiluhur Dam is a multi-purpose embankment dam on the Citarum River in West Java, Indonesia. It is located 70 km east of Jakarta, close to the medium-size town of Purwakarta. It took around 3-4 hours from Jakarta to get there.

Well, this is my first time visit Jatiluhur Dam and actually this place is quite famous for fishing and recreation. Together with my friends we came here for one reason, to know what kind of birds that can be found in here.

 
At night we saw some nocturnal birds like Buffy Fish Owl (Ketupa ketupu), Large-tailed Nightjar (Caprimulgus macrurus), Savanna Nightjar (Caprimulgus affinis) along the road. Early morning we heard the Changeable Hawk-eagle (Spizaetus cirrhatus) calling from the forest. That’s a good a sign for us! And not long after that, he showed himself.

Fruiting Fig Tree
We didn’t walk much, because we don’t know this area yet. But lucky for us, we found one small fruiting fig tree. We saw some nice species like Grey-cheeked Green Pigeon (Treron griseicauda griseicauda), Blue-eared Barbet (Megalaima australis australis), Asian Red-eyed Bulbul (Pycnonotus brunneus brunneus), Black-headed Bulbul (Pycnonotus atriceps atriceps), and even the Javan Treeshrew (Tupaia javanica) feeding on this tree.

Birds of Prey
Around 10.00AM, we saw the Oriental Honey-buzzard (Pernis ptilorhyncus) fly high. Ten minutes after that our first eagle (Pale Morph Changeable Hawk-eagle) started to soaring. After he flew away, my friend saw another eagle flying right above us. Well, same species just a different morph..Dark Morph Changeable Hawk-eagle. On the way back, we saw a juvenile Changeable Hawk-eagle flew right above our car. And we saw the Crested Serpent Eagle where we close to the dam..

This place has a lot of surprises. Close to the main road we make a stop for a while, hope for another birds. Inside the bamboo vegetation, we heard a strange call (for us) so we decided to get close to that call. Oh, that's the Yellow-bellied Warbler (Abroscopus superciliaris vordermani) a lifer for my friends. We heard the Greater Coucal (Centropus sinensis) too, but he didn't show himself. That's good, at least we know that they still can be found in here..

Problem
But pity, some of the villagers who living around this area they hunt the birds to get more money. Even people from outside this area come to hunt the birds too. And there's no law to stop hunting around this location.

Menemani teman dari Malang

February 2014
Kalau waktu di Malang saya ditemani oleh Mas Heru Cahyono birding disana, sekarang saatnya saya menemani dia birding di Jakarta. Tetapi karena dia tidak punya waktu yang lebih lama, kami hanya birding di satu lokasi saja. Kebun Binatang Ragunan adalah salah satu RTH di Jakarta Selatan yang masih menyimpan banyak sekali jenis burung, oleh karena itu saya memilih tempat ini. Salah satu burung yang ingin di lihat oleh Mas Heru adalah jenis Red-breasted Parakeet (Psittacula alexandri alexandri).

Kurang lebih 45 menit dari rumah, kamipun tiba di lokasi tepat di saat burung-burung sedang memulai aktifitasnya. Memasuki lokasi, kami berhenti di dekat sebuah pohon besar dimana merupakan pohon tempat favorit para Betet dan Kakatua. Kamipun mempersiapkan peralatan masing-masing. Tidak lama kemudian kami disambut oleh burung bewarna putih yang bersuara sangat keras, yakni Yellow-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea) yang merupakan jenis kritis / Critically Endangered.

Sesudah puas menikmati keindahan si Kakatua, kami melanjutkan perjalanan menuju ke sebuah parit besar. Kami melihat sepasang Ruby-cheeked Sunbird (Anthreptes singalensis bantenensis) sedang mencari makan di pepohonan yang rendah. Namun karena kondisi yang kurang cahaya dan burung tersebut selalu bergerak, membuat kami sulit untuk mendapatkan fotonya. Dari beberapa frame yang saya ambil, ternyata hanya satu frame saja yang lumayan dan hanya burung betina saja.

Tidak lama kemudian terdengar suara Blue-eared Kingfisher (Alcedo meninting meninting) yang cukup dekat. Ternyata benar, seekor anakan Blue-eared Kingfisher sedang menunggu induknya yang sedang mencari makanan untuknya. Beberapa kali induknya datang memberi makan, tetapi kami tidak dapat mengambil fotonya karena terhalang rimbunnya semak-semak.
