Menemani teman dari Malang

Kalau waktu di Malang saya ditemani oleh Mas Heru Cahyono birding disana, sekarang saatnya saya menemani dia birding di Jakarta. Tetapi karena dia tidak punya waktu yang lebih lama, kami hanya birding di satu lokasi saja. Kebun Binatang Ragunan adalah salah satu RTH di Jakarta Selatan yang masih menyimpan banyak sekali jenis burung, oleh karena itu saya memilih tempat ini. Salah satu burung yang ingin di lihat oleh Mas Heru adalah jenis Red-breasted Parakeet (Psittacula alexandri alexandri).

Kurang lebih 45 menit dari rumah, kamipun tiba di lokasi tepat di saat burung-burung sedang memulai aktifitasnya. Memasuki lokasi, kami berhenti di dekat sebuah pohon besar dimana merupakan pohon tempat favorit para Betet dan Kakatua. Kamipun mempersiapkan peralatan masing-masing. Tidak lama kemudian kami disambut oleh burung bewarna putih yang bersuara sangat keras, yakni Yellow-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea) yang merupakan jenis kritis / Critically Endangered.

Sesudah puas menikmati keindahan si Kakatua, kami melanjutkan perjalanan menuju ke sebuah parit besar. Kami melihat sepasang Ruby-cheeked Sunbird (Anthreptes singalensis bantenensis) sedang mencari makan di pepohonan yang rendah. Namun karena kondisi yang kurang cahaya dan burung tersebut selalu bergerak, membuat kami sulit untuk mendapatkan fotonya. Dari beberapa frame yang saya ambil, ternyata hanya satu frame saja yang lumayan dan hanya burung betina saja.

Tidak lama kemudian terdengar suara Blue-eared Kingfisher (Alcedo meninting meninting) yang cukup dekat. Ternyata benar, seekor anakan Blue-eared Kingfisher sedang menunggu induknya yang sedang mencari makanan untuknya. Beberapa kali induknya datang memberi makan, tetapi kami tidak dapat mengambil fotonya karena terhalang rimbunnya semak-semak.

Selain itu kami juga menemukan Ruby-throated Bulbul (Pycnonotus dispar) yang sedang menikmati sarapannya.

Hari semakin siang dan semakin panas, kami pun segera mengakhiri pengamatan hari ini. Di dekat pintu keluar kami melihat sepasang Red-breasted Parakeet yang sedang bertengger di sekitar sarangnya. Kamipun mengamati mereka sebelum kami meninggalkan tempat ini.

Birding in Ragunan Zoo

Together with my friends (Budi Susanto, Rahmat Fadrikal, and Derry Septa) we birding in Ragunan Zoo, South Jakarta. Our first bird is Grey-cheeked Green Pigeon Treron griseicauda griseicauda. This bird is rarely found in Jakarta. From my observations, this is the first record. We saw one pair feeding on fruiting Fig Tree with other birds like Black-naped Oriole Oriolus chinensis and Yellow-vented Bulbuls Pycnonotus goiavier.

After taking some pictures, we move to crocodiles pen. We got one female Blue-eared Kingfisher Alcedo meninting in close range only for a few second before she flew away.

At 09.30 AM, Budi and Rahmat split with us because they must back to their home. We continue our observations. Now, we waiting the Brown Prinia Prinia polychroa for a while. A few minutes later, one Brown Prinia start to calling from behind the grasses and then he move to the open perch on the tree. I only got record shot!
Around crocodile pen, i got one Sub-adult Olive-backed Tailorbird Orthotomus sepium. Actually this bird more common in the mountain. I've never seen this bird in Jakarta before.

Brown Prinia

Back to fruiting Fig Tree, i saw more than 10 individuals of Grey-cheeked Green Pigeon feeding together with Yellow-vented Bulbuls, Black-naped Orioles, Spotted Doves, and Ruby-throated Bulbuls Pycnonotus dispar!

Bad Weather

The weather was cloudy and rainy at Ragunan Zoo, but i was still waiting
for the Blue-eared Kingfisher (Alcedo meninting). Finally, the female
Blue-eared Kingfisher came and perching at her favorite branch. But
near her perch there's a zookeeper who was cleaning the leaves, so
she flew to another tree.

Then, she landed on open perch, looking down for prey. After about one
minute, she's diving to catch a shrimp..after that she's perching on
rock to eat her prey. But i missed the moment when she's eating her
prey, because the speed is too slow (around 1/13 to 1/20). I only
got the photo when she's finished to eat.
