Day 4 at Tahura R.Soerjo

4 April 2012,

This morning with my brother we go Cangar Hot Springs again before we go to Kutukan and Gajah Mungkur. Inside the park were welcomed by a Javan Whistling Thrush (Myophonus glaucinus). First, my brother saw him perching on the low branch. Then he landed on the table, to obtain the remaining crumbs fried bananas. I threw some earthworms that i take, and the bird landed to the ground to pick up the worms. After that he flew go inside the forest.

Inside the Hot Springs we saw one Horsfield's Thrush (Zoothera horsfieldi) foraging. I think it's the same individual that i saw two days ago, but today he looks more shy. We can't get closer to him, so we just get some record shot.

After we finish birding inside the Cangar Hot Springs, we go to Kutukan and Gajah Mungkur. From Kutukan we can see a very beautiful forest scenery and if we're lucky we can see the Eagles soaring below us. My friend dropped me off at Kutukan, and he returned to basecamp to pick up my brother. While i was waiting for a passing bird, there's a hornet perched on my head and when i want to get rid of it, i was stung that hornet. My right hand gets hot and it feels very hurt. I soaked my hands in a small ditch where the water is cold to reduce pain in my hand.
After that my friend and my brother arrived at Kutukan and they laughed at me. Then we went from there to the Gajah Mungkur. When we arrive at Gajah Mungkur we set up our camera. Not long after, we saw an eagle flying out from behind the hill. That's a juvenile Javan Hawk Eagle (Spizaetus bartelsi), and there's one Oriental Honey-Buzzard (Pernis ptilorhyncus) flew to follow him, and finally they soaring together. Wow!! this is a very rare sight.

After that we back to Kutukan again, my brother and my friend went there by motorcycle, but i get there by walking. Along the road i saw so many birds, like Black Eagle (Ictinaetus malayensis), Yellow-throated Hanging Parrot (Loriculus pusillus), White-flanked Sunbird (Aethopyga eximia), Olive-backed Tailorbird (Orthotomus sepium), Blood-breasted Flowerpecker (Dicaeum sanguinolentum sanguinolentum), Mountain White-eye (Zosterops montanus), and the others. And at Kutukan i saw one pair of Javan Hawk Eagle (Spizaetus bartelsi) flying very low above me. But i don't bring my camera, so i just watching by using my binocular. But Boas and Heru managed to get photos of Javan Hawk Eagle that soaring above them.

Because the weather began to overcast and the fog has come, we go back to our basecamp. We take a break for a minute, then we go back to Cangar Hot Springs again. Inside the Hot Springs we got Indigo Flycatcher (Eumyias indigo), Snowy-browed Flycatcher (Ficedula hyperythra vulcani), and Javan Whistling Thrush (Myophonus glaucinus).
